We Came Through Ellis Island
This great little book is part of National Geographic's I Am American series. In this installment, young Emma Markowitz (who becomes Emma Marks when her family docks in America) explains her family's transition from the poor steppes of Russia to the poor tenements of New York's Lower East Side. As with other books in this series, this one illuminates with letters and diary entries, giving alternating tenors to a story that is told with one voice.
When the Mission Padre Came to the Rancho
Another great book in National Geographic's great I Am American series, this book has a long title that nonetheless accurately describes the main event of the book, which tells the early story of California, before it became part of the United States.
Yankee Blue Or Rebel Gray?
Follow the adventures of young Sam Shaw, whose family is split apart by the Civil War. His brother and cousin fight against each other, his mother and her sister go through a world of emotions, and the deadly war takes place very near the Shaw family farm. This book really shows how young people went through life during this period in history.
