The 15-year-old Valieva was favored to win after a leading performance in the short program. However, the recent announcement that she tested positive for a banned substance at the Russian national championships in December 2021 resulted in a flurry of legal maneuvers that featured a suspension, a reinstatement, and an eventual declaration by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that she could compete anyway. Valieva did compete but fell on three of the seven jumps she attempted. She finished with the fourth-highest score. Instead, winning the gold medal was Anna Shcherbakova (middle in photo), also of the Russian Olympic Committee. Her teammate Alexandra Trusova (left in photo) won silver. Jackson, who finished third at the U.S. trials, took Bowe's spot. Miho Takagi of Japan took second, 0.08 seconds behind; in third place, 0.17 seconds back, was Angelina Golikova of the Russian Olympic Committee. SNOW DISRUPTS SKIING, SNOWBOARDING EVENTS
February 13, 2022
Real snow disrupted several Olympic events. Organizers briefly postponed the second run of the men's giant slalom, after some competitors faltered on the first run because of poor visibility. Snow fell all day, and snow plows were out. Organizers canceled training for women's downhill and qualifying runs for women's freeski slopestyle. When men's giant slalom finally resumed, Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, the current world best in that event, claimed gold, ahead of Slovenia Zan Kranjec and France's Mathieu Faivre, respectively. Before the Beijing Games started, organizers touted their event as the first Winter Olympics to have ski and snowboarding courses made nearly entirely from artificial snow.
