Positive Drug Test Won't Stop Russian Figure Skater Competing
February 14, 2022 Kamila Valieva is free to skate still at the Games, despite a positive drug test. The Russian skater was apparently taking the drug trimetazidine (TMZ), which is used to treat the heart condition angina (chest pain resulting from too little blood flowing to the heart) at the time of the Russian national championships, in December 2021. She tested positive for the drug at the time, but the results of that test were only recently released. ![]() The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that Valieva, who is 15, is a "protected person" and perhaps did not fully understand the kinds of medical treatments that she was being given. The ruling allows her to continue to compete and offers no judgment on whether she broke the rules. Further, the Court said, it wasn't the fault of Valieva that the delay between her taking the test and her finding out the results was not her fault. A Swedish lab recently reported the positive test result, from samples taken on Dec. 25, 2021. After the announcement, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency suspended Valieva; her appeal resulted in a lifting of the suspension, pending a ruling by the world court. A person who takes the drug TMZ experiences a greater blood flow and more oxygen in the muscles, which in turn can boost athletic performance. The World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) banned TMZ in 2014, and officials have found little evidence of the use of the drug, after the high-profile case of Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, who was suspended for three months after testing positive for the drug, which he said he took to treat the exact medical condition that the drug was created to treat. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee has announced that it will not have medal ceremonies for the women's individual figure skating competition if Valieva earns a podium finish. Medal ceremonies for the team skate competition, which Valieva and the Russian team won last week, have still not taken place and will not now, the IOC said. During that Valieva became the first female figure skater to land a quad jump during an Olympics competition. |
