17-year-old Becomes Youngest Licensed Pilot in U.K.
December 1, 2023 An English plane enthusiast has indulged his childhood obsession and is now, age 17, the United Kingdom's youngest licensed pilot. Milo, who lives in Kington, in the English county of Herefordshire, lived near Shobdon Airfield, near Leominster, when he was younger and would spend a lot of time watching the planes come and go. Shobdon began as a British Army airfield, once had a glider training school, and now offers air tax services to Europe and helicopter flight training. When Milo turned 14, he started taking flying lessons, although he had been in a plane when he was 9. (The pilot even let him hold the controls.) He took enough lessons to qualify, finishing up at Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport, another former Royal Air Force property, near Stourport, some 40 miles to the northeast. After taking all of the required tests, he collected his pilot's license on his 17th birthday. (U.K. rules state that a registered pilot must be at least 17 years old.) |
