Titanic II to Complete Original's Journey in 2022
October 28, 2018 The Titanic is still on the ocean floor, but the Titanic II aims to complete the original's route 110 years later. ![]() Blue Star Line, the company that has launched many a ship (including the ill-fated Titanic), has recreated that iconic ocean liner and will sail it along the exact same ocean trajectory. The announcement to launch the new ship was made in 2012, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sailing of the original Titanic. Launch date was to be in 2016. Financial disputes have kept that from happening. Construction is back on track. Titanic II will have 10 decks and will carry up to 2,400 passengers and up to 900 members of crew. Unlike its predecessor, which was powered by coal-fired boilers and steam engines, the new edition will run on a diesel-electronic propulsion system. ![]() The company has been quick to point that although the interiors and cabin layout on the new ship are roughly the same as on the old ship (including the iconic Grand Staircase), the new vessel has been built using modern safety protocols, including up-to-date weather tracking devices and the correct number of lifeboats. A lack of lifeboats was one of many factors that ultimately proved the undoing of the original Titanic, which launched from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, and never reached its destination across the Atlantic. More than 1,500 of the 2,200 onboard lost their lives after the ship hit an iceberg and sunk. |
