Louvre World's Most-visited Museum
The Louvre is once again the world's most visited museum. According to the 12than annual Theme Index and Museum Index, the famed Paris museum welcomed 8.1 million visitors in 2017. That was the highest total for any museum during that year. The 2016 champion, the National Museum of China, was a close second in 2017, with 8 million visitors. Joint third were the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Air and Space Museum, in Washington, D.C.; each of those museums brought in 7 million visitors. Another American museum, the National Museum of National History, was in seventh place, behind fifth-place Vatican Museums and sixth-place Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. Rounding out the top 10 were two London attractions, the British Museum and the Tate Modern, and the U.S. National Gallery of Art. |
