January 5, 2021 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith won the 2020 Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best college football player. He was the first at his position to win the award in 29 years.

Smith played a large part in leading his team to the position as top-ranked and favorite to win the National Championship. He caught 105 passes for 1,641 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. He found the end zone on two other occasions, returning one punt for a touchdown and scoring the other rushing.

Smith was one of four finalists for the award, given each year since 1937 by the Downtown Athletic Club. The others, all quarterbacks, were Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, Kyle Trask of Florida, and Smith's Crimson Tide teammate Mac Jones. Smith was the clear favorite with voters:

Jones1,130 points138

In his collegiate career, Smith totaled 3,750 yards receiving and scored 43 touchdowns. He became the third Alabama player to win the Heisman, joining running backs Mark Ingram in 2009 and Derrick Henry in 2015.

The last Heisman winner who was not a quarterback or running back was two-way player Charles Woodson of Michigan, in 1997.

The Heisman Trophy is an annual award given to the college football player who is voted the top in the nation by a combination of former Heisman winners and members of the media.

Named for pioneering George Tech coach John Heisman, the award was created in 1935 at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York. (It was named the Downtown Athletic Club trophy the first year but was renamed in 1936, after Heisman's death.)
