The other three were these:

• John Adams, who refused to see Thomas Jefferson , whom he considered a bitter political enemy, succeed him in 1801. (The two would later reconcile.)
• John Quincy Adams, who continued a string of bitter relations with Andrew Jackson by refusing to attend the latter's inauguration in 1829
• Andrew Johnson, who in 1869 pointedly did not attend the inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant.

Two other Presidents did not attend the inauguration of their successors, though historians have not classified those events as boycotts. Martin van Buren, who lost his re-election bid to William Henry Harrison in 1840, did not attend the latter's inauguration ceremony; however, historians, have no evidence that he did so out of spite. In 1921, the inauguration of Warren G. Harding went ahead without the presence of his predecessor, Woodrow Wilson, who was ill.
