King Felipe VI of Spain
Felipe VI (Philip VI) is the reigning monarch of Spain. He ascended the throne in 2014. He was born on Jan. 30, 1968, in Madrid, to Juan Carlos and Princess Sofía of Greece and Denmark. They also had two daughters, Elena and Cristina, when Felipe was born. The following year, Felipe's father became Prince of Spain, the designated successor to the country's current leader, Francisco Franco. When Franco died in 1975, Juan Carlos became king. Felipe, then 7, attended his father's proclamation; two years later, Juan Carlos designated his son his successor. Young Felipe went to school in his early years at Santa María de los Rosales. He traveled abroad for high school, attending Lakefield College School in Ontario, Canada. For university studies, he earned a law degree at Madrid's Autonomous University and a master's degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, in the U.S. Following in the footsteps of his father and many of his predecessors, Felipe completed military training, enrolling at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza in 1985, transferring to the naval training school the following year, and transitioning to the air force training school the year after that. He continued in the military for years after that. Felipe was Spain's flag-bearer at the 1992 Olympic Games, in Barcelona. He also competed, in sailing; his team finished sixth in the Soling class. In 2004, Felipe married Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, a TV journalist. They have two daughters, Leonor and Sofía. As heir to the throne, he represented his country at many events, in Spain and in other countries. He was a well-known figure on the world stage when his father announced his intention to abdicate, on June 2, 2014. Felipe was then proclaimed King Felipe VI on June 18; at the time, he was the youngest monarch in Europe. He is still king. His older daughter is his designated successor. |
