Henri: Grand Duke of Luxembourg
Henri is Grand Duke of Luxembourg. He is the sixth monarch from the House of Nassau-Weilburg. He was born on April 15, 1955, at Betzdorf Castle, in Betzdorf, Luxembourg. His father was Jean, the eventual Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and his mother was Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. He was their second-oldest child and oldest son. When Henri was born, the ruling monarch was his grandmother, Grand Duchess Charlotte. She abdicated in 1964, giving way to Jean. At that time, Henri was 9. The boy attended schools in his home country and in France. He graduated from university in France in 1974 and then entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, in England. His final studies came at the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, earning a graduate degree in 1980. In that same year, his father named him to the Council of State. Eighteen years later, Jean delegated most of his monarchical powers to his son. Jean abdicated on Oct. 7, 2000, and Henri became Grand Duke. Henri married Maria Teresa Mestre y Batista in February 1981. They have five children: Guillaume (1981), Félix (1984), Louis (1986), Alexandra (1991), and Sébastien (1992). |
