Chocolate Confetti Cake Oreos will have two layers of filling. Sprinkles will dot the traditional creme flavor; the other layer will be chocolate creme. As well, the outer cookie layers will feature sprinklers.

Mondelez, the company that owns the Oreo brand, said that it was releasing the special flavor for a limited time and that the occasion was the 110th anniversary of the first sale, which took place on March 6, 1912, when the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) sold Oreos to a Hoboken, N.J., grocery store.

The original name for the cookie was Oreo Biscuit. The company changed the name in 1921 to Oreo Sandwich, in 1937 to Oreo Creme Sandwich, and in 1974 to Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie. Now, as most people refer to it, the name is just the one word?Oreo.

The inspiration for the name is lost in the mists of production history. Oreo is the Greek word for mountain, but that might not have inspired Nabisco to choose that word. In the same vein, oro is the French word for gold, which was the main color on the earlier packaging of the product.

The popular Double Stuf, with two layers of creme inside, appeared for the first time in 1974. The company upped the ante with three layers, called Mega Stuf, in 2013. And in 2019 came the Most Stuf, a super-sized creme layer inside the usual two wafers. Going the other direction, the company introduced Oreo Thins in 2015.

Halloween flavor, with orange-colored creme inside, launched in 1991; four years later came a Christmas version. Although a typical Oreo fits in easily into a person's mouth, the manufacturer introduced the Oreo Mini in 1992.

Mondelez said that its fastest-selling flavor in the United States for 2021 was Pokémon Oreo. Among the other creme flavors available are these:

The company also sells a soft snack cake version, called Cakesters, a breakfast cereal, called O's, and a pancake and waffle mix called Funfetti. That flavor also powers brownie and cake mixes.

Gluten free customers can choose from traditional or Double Stuf options that avoid gluten altogether.

Oreos aren't just in cookie form. The company makes ice cream cones and bars peppered with the cookies, as well as ice cream sandwiches featuring the iconic wafers.

The 110th-anniversary flavor joins a list of other limited time flavors launched by the company in recent years. Among those have been Piña Colada, Root Beer Float, and Waffle & Syrup.
