The next President of the United States will likely be a member of either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. The last President who didn’t belong to one of those parties was Millard Fillmore, a member of the Whig Party. Fillmore was President in 1850–1853. Some presidential elections have featured prominent third-party candidates. The last such candidate to gain a significant number of electoral votes was George Wallace, in 1968.

Both major political parties featured multiple candidates running for President in 2020. The remaining candidates are the following:

  • Biden

    Trump
Democrat Joe Biden was Vice-president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A former public defender, he represented Delaware in the Senate for more than three decades. He ran for president in the elections of 1988 and 2008. One of more than a dozen candidates initially, he has secured enough delegates to be his party's nominee for the presidential election in November. His last remaining challenger, Bernie Sanders, withdrew from the race on April 8.
  • On the Republican side, President Donald Trump is running for re-election. He faced a few challengers, all of whom have withdrawn.

Some presidential primaries and caucuses remain. The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to take place Aug. 17–20 in Milwaukee, Wis. The Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place Aug. 24–27 in Charlotte, N.C.
